GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Seven Filipino regional and international champions from this city will climb the ring on Sunday in several matches to be held at a local mall.

Randy Petalcorin, the current interim World Boxing Association (WBA) world light flyweight champion, will fight Arnold Garde for the vacant IBF Pan Pacific light-flyweight title in the main event.

Petalcorin, who has a record of 24 wins with 18 knockouts, two defeats and a draw, will face Garde, who has a record of seven victories, three losses and two draws.

This will be Petalcorin’s comeback fight after his defeat in Australia to Omari Kimweri for the WBC Silver flyweight title last April.

“Hindi ko malimutan yun. 'Yung referee hindi binilang yung four knockdowns ko. Nag-split decision in favor sa kalaban ko. Australian ang referee, judge ang asawa nya,” Petalcorin recalled.

“Kailangang nating mag-champion sa harap ng mga kababayan."

(I can't forget that fight. The referee didn't count the four knockdowns in my favor. My opponent won in a split decision. The referee was Australian and his wife was a judge. We need to win the championship in front of our countrymen.)

Eden Sonsona, the cousin of Marvin Sonsona, will also be part of the main event.

Sonsona will face Jaime Barcelona in an eight-round bout.

This will be Sonsona's first fight after a 15-month hiatus, when he defeated Mexican Adrian Estrella in a round-two knockout last May 2015 in Mexico.

He won the World Boxing Council international silver super-featherweight championship.

“Lugar ko ‘to eh. Kung baga homecourt ko. Kailangan kong magpakita ng magandang laban,” Sonsona said.

(This is my turf, home court if you will. I need to show a good fight."

Other fighters in the undercard matches are World Boxing Federation international featherweight champion John Vincent Moralde, WBC Asian Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Reymart Gaballo, World Boxing Federation international bantamweight champion Mike Plania, WBC Asian Boxing Council super featherweight champion Romero Duno, and former WBO Asia Pacific flyweight champion Ben Mananquil.

"It’s our early Christmas gift for boxing fans here in GenSan," said promoter Jim Claude Manangquil.

The card will also feature 10 amateur fights to showcase the city's young prospects.
