MANILA, Philippines – National University (NU) steamrolled to an 84-55 win over University of the Philippines (UP) to complete a sweep of the elimination round of the UAAP Season 79 women's basketball tournament on Tuesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

This marks the third consecutive season that NU has swept the elimination round of the tournament, and will now advance to the Finals of Season 79 outright.

The Lady Bulldogs have won 46 consecutive games dating back from the 2014 season, and are now just two games away from a third consecutive title.

Reigning MVP Afril Bernardino led NU with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists, while reserves Je-Anne Canelo and Florymae Ceno had 14 and 12 points, respectively.

De La Salle University, behind a 22-point effort from Khate Castillo and a 17-point, 16-rebound double-double from Snow Penaranda, downed Ateneo de Manila University, 71-60, to secure the second seed with an 11-3 record and claim a twice-to-beat edge in the step-ladder semifinals.

Love Sto. Domingo had 25 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Ruthlaine Tacula added 17 markers as University of the East (UE) turned back University of Sto. Tomas (UST), 64-58, to clinch the third seed.

Adamson University stayed in the hunt for the final semifinals berth after edging Far Eastern University, 57-53, in the last game of the day.

The Lady Warriors finished with a 10-4 record, while the Tigresses and the Falcons are now tied for fourth place with 6-8 slates.

Adamson and UST will figure in a playoff for the last Final 4 berth next week, with the winner taking on UE in the first phase of the step-ladder semifinals.

Meanwhile, the NU Bullpups seized the early lead in the UAAP Season 79 juniors division as they held off the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 73-68, also on Tuesday at the Arena in San Juan.

Winderlich Coyoca led NU with 20 points, and John Lloyd Clemente had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the now 2-0 Bulldogs.

The Blue Eaglets were again led by SJ Belangel (23 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) but it was enough as they suffered their first loss of the season.

The Adamson Baby Falcons defeated FEU-Diliman, 78-65, to claim its second win as well. Gerry Abadiano led the way for Adamson with 14 points.

The UE Junior Warriors, for their part, ended a 29-game losing straek that had stretched for four seasons by defeating University of Santo Tomas, 87-77. Dustin Angeles and Rey Balundo combined for 19 points in the win.

In the first game of the day's quadruple-header, the UPIS Junior Maroons gave rookie coach Paolo Mendoza his first win by blasting last season's runner-up, La Salle-Zobel, 81-59.

Juan Gomez de Liaño, the younger brother of UP rookie Javi, starred for the Junior Maroons with 20 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
