Top surfers join Lanuza Surfing Festival

SURIGAO DEL SUR -- The heat is on at this year's Lanuza Surfing Festival, which kicked off Sunday afternoon at Doot Poktoy Surfing Paradise in Lanuza.

The surfing cup features some of the country's top surfers along with local and foreign participants.

Piso Alcala, who finished second in the 2016 Siargao Surfing Cup, will face surfing champion Philmar Alipayo, who won the West Sumbawa Pro in Bali, Indonesia last July and is ranked second overall in the Asian Surfing Championship.

Both Alcala and Alipayo are from the Philippines' surfing capital, Siargao.

Nilbie Blancada, who is among Asia's top surfers, will also see action in the shortboard women's open.

Blancada and Philmar represented the Philippines in Rote Open 2016 last October in Indonesia.

Over 100 foreign and local surfers registered to compete in longboard and shortboard men and women's open this year.

Surfers 15 year old and below, meanwhile, are compettng in grommet category.

Winners in the week-long competition will be announced on Saturday, November 12.

This is the 14th year Surigao del Sur is holding the Lanuza Surfing Festival. An P80,000 prize purse is up for grabs this year.
