MANILA, Philippines -- Only one half of Lyceum of the Philippines University’s terrific twins was in action in their game against Arellano University on Thursday, with Jaycee Marcelino needing to get the job done without his brother, Jayvee.

Jayvee needed to sit out the game to recover from the bloody gash he sustained in their previous contest, an 83-81 loss to University of Perpetual Help. That game saw Jayvee get inadvertently elbowed by Perpetual’s Rom Mangalino with under nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, opening up a huge cut.

He would be sent to St. Luke’s Medical Center after the game, and was not in uniform when the Pirates returned to action a week later.

“Okay na naman siya,” Jaycee said of his brother. “Nagpapagaling lang, kasi sariwa pa ‘yung (sugat).”

Jayvee, who is averaging 6.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in the NCAA Season 94 tournament, needed eight stitches.

Without his brother, Jaycee worked double-time for the Pirates, scoring 21 points on just 11 shots in their massive 113-79 demolition of the Chiefs. He also added three rebounds, three assists, and four steals in just under 20 minutes of action.

“Ayun nga, wala si Jayvee kaya mas inano ko sa sarili ko na mas magta-trabaho ako sa loob ng court, kasi ayun nga, wala ‘yung kambal ko,” said Jaycee.

“Kaya siguro nag-doble effort ako para sa team namin, na mapanalo namin ang game na ito,” he added.

It was a morale-boosting victory for the Pirates, who saw their 12-game winning streak come to an end against the Altas last week. With the triumph, they secured a playoff for a spot in the Final 4.

“Masaya kami na naipanalo namin, nakapag-bounce back kami,” said Jaycee, who is second in the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game. “Ayun, nagising kami sa pagkatalo namin noong nakaraan.”

“Mas lalo kaming nag-trabaho sa loob,” he added.
