MANILA, Philippines – The Jose Rizal University (JRU) basketball program is in for a review after a disappointing campaign in the NCAA Season 92 tournament that saw them miss out on the Final Four.

This, according to head coach Vergel Meneses following their 58-85 loss to San Sebastian College to end the tournament.

The Heavy Bombers were touted as a potential Final Four team ahead of the tournament thanks to their intact line-up that featured the explosive "Blast Brothers" tandem of Tey-Tey Teodoro and Paolo Pontejos, but a sorry 1-3 loss to start the tournament derailed their campaign.

They stayed in contention, thanks to a solid start in the second round, but an 80-89 overtime loss to University of Perpetual Help all but dashed their Final Four hopes.

"Very disappointing season talaga," Meneses told reporters after Thursday's game that saw them conclude the season with a 9-9 win-loss record. "'Di ko ine-expect na ganito."

"Kahit 'di kami rated sa Top Four, alam ko sa sarili ko na we're a strong team," he added.

For Meneses, what made their performances even more disappointing is that he had a team full of veterans who should have been able to handle the pressure of playing in the NCAA, and lived up to what was expected of them.

"Maybe this is not the year for JRU," he said. "Pero siyempre, ito 'yung tingin ko na almost intact. 'Yung ibang team, puro bago eh. Pag tiningnan mo, dapat kami talaga ang papasok. (Pero) talagang ganoon. Evaluate namin lahat kung saan nagkamali."

Following their sorry campaign, Meneses said the entire program will be reviewed, and he hinted at a complete overhaul with no players assured of spots in next season's team.

"Next week, we'll evaluate everything – what went wrong, anong kailangan palitan, sino kailangan maglaro para sa akin, ang mga Team B ko," he said.

"Lahat kami, i-evaluate," he stressed. "Pati coaches ko, 'yung mali ko. 'Di lang pwedeng isang side lang, na puro players."

The Heavy Bombers will be losing Paolo Pontejos, Jordan dela Paz, and Mark Cruz to graduation, and Meneses said he is unsure how next season's line-up will look like.

"There's no guarantee," he said. "Titingnan ko rin 'yung off the bench na 'di ko naman napakinabangan at 'di naka-contribute, ibaba ko muna sila."

"Siguro, dapat talaga may dala akong isang sakong pusa," he joked. "Ayaw mawala 'yung daga."
