MANILA -- Alexandra Eala and Melanie Faye Dizon are set to compete against the best of Asia-Pacific in next month’s WTA Future Stars Tournament in Singapore following their victories at the recent Cebuana Lhuillier Girls’ Tennis Challenge.

Eala and Dizon emerged as the Philippines’ top under-14 and under-16 Filipina junior tennis players, respectively, after beating some of the country’s best age groupers at the Girl’s Tennis Challenge, which served as the qualifier for the WTA Future Stars.

“I'd like to thank and congratulate all the participants, most especially the two champions of the Cebuana Lhuillier WTA Future Stars qualifying tournament, for giving us such exciting matches,” said Philippine Tennis Association (PhilTA) chairman and Cebuana Lhuillier president and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier.

“It's about time that we take home the WTA crown, and there's definitely a good chance for this goal to be realized this year.”

Eala claimed the U-14 title by beating Miles Vitaliano, 6-0, 7-5.

In the finale, Eala continued her streak of heady plays and smooth, consistent returns. After a strong 6-0 opening set, she kept her composure even as Vitaliano rallied for a 5-5 tie in the second set.

Both ace players were favorites to clash for the U-14 crown, Eala and Vitaliano reached the semis with an impressive 3-0 record in their respective elimination round groups.

In the U-16 division championship, Dizon beat division favorite, Carlyn Bless Guarde, 6-1, 6-2.

Dizon picked up the pace and took the first set with her powerful smashes, while Guarde struggled with her returns. The match instantly leaned towards Dizon’s favor, as she took advantage of her opponent’s errors that led to her victory.
