MANILA, Philippines -- Several players shone for Adamson University as the Soaring Falcons trounced University of the East (UE), 90-76, to stay unbeaten in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Sean Manganti led the way for the Soaring Falcons, firing 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting, while Jerrick Ahanmisi scored 17 and Papi Sarr had a double-double of 15 points and 21 rebounds.

Adamson improved to 2-0, the first time since 2003 that they started a season with back-to-back victories.

“I guess it's a bonus for us,” said Adamson coach Franz Pumaren of their early success. “Who would think that at this stage we would be in this kind of position? But it's still early.”

“We just have to seize the moment, but not to feel that we’re so unbeatable or that we’re the top team,” he added.

The Falcons initially broke the game open in the second quarter, when Ahanmisi unloaded 13 points to anchor a searing 17-0 run that pushed them ahead, 42-38. They took a 42-32 lead at the half, and appeared headed for a comfortable win.

But the Red Warriors stayed within striking distance, trailing by just six points, 50-44, midway through the third period before the Falcons regrouped. Manganti scored 14 points in the quarter, and Jonathan Espeleta provided a boost as well, drilling the triple that made it a 20-point game, 67-47, with 90 seconds left in the quarter.

UE star Alvin Pasaol took matters into his own hands in the fourth period, going into attack mode in an attempt to bring the Red Warriors back. They came to within 11 points multiple times, but Adamson simply had too much firepower.

Buckets by Sarr and Manganti kept the Soaring Falcons in control, before veteran Simon Camacho joined the scoring parade late to put the finishing touches on the win.

“We anticipated (Pasaol),” said Pumaren. “He’s a scoring machine. But what’s important is to clamp down on the other teammates of Pasaol.”

Pasaol finished with 36 points, but made only 14 of his 33 field goals. The high-scoring forward also had 11 rebounds and two assists, though he also committed six of Adamson’s 19 turnovers. Jason Strait was the only other UE player in double-digits with 10 points.

Adamson shot 42.31% from the field, while UE made 42.42% of its shots. But the Falcons knocked down 16 of 22 free throws, while the Red Warriors were 15-of-29 from the line. Adamson also scored 17 points off UE’s 19 turnovers.
