MANILA, Philippines -- There were plenty of lessons learned for the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws on Wednesday after they shockingly lost to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers in their second game of UAAP Season 81.

The Tamaraws were heavily favored to win the game, especially after an impressive performance against De La Salle University in their season-opener. UST, for its part, showed its grit in their first game against National University, yet the Growling Tigers were still clear underdogs.

UST proceeded to shred those projections to pieces. Veteran guards Marvin Lee and Renzo Subido hit enough shots to keep the Growling Tigers afloat, then their rookies drained the big buckets in crunch time. The Tigers hacked out a 76-74 win - their first over FEU since Season 78.

Squandered in the loss was a superb performance from FEU big man Prince Orizu, who put up 25 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks against UST while making 11 of his 13 shots in the game.

“I feel disappointed, but not too disappointed,” the center said after the game. “I trust my teammates and myself and the coaches, that we’re gonna bounce back strong.”

He commended UST for playing “a great game.” “Hopefully, we get back at them in the second round, and get a better game,” Orizu added.

In the meantime, the unexpected loss should serve as a lesson to the Tamaraws.

"(We need) to play as a team,” said Orizu. “That’s one of the big things, because we don’t want to come to the game and play selfish. We just want to stick together, no matter what happens.”

“That’s the most important thing -- win or lose, we try to stick together.”

The other big lesson that they learned? “No team is easy in the UAAP,” Orizu stressed.

“So, we have to treat every game like it's a finals game or a Final 4 (game),” he added.

Orizu is also looking to build on his huge double-double against the Growling Tigers when they return to action on Saturday against defending champion Ateneo de Manila University. The big man had only bounced back from a scoreless outing against La Salle, and wants to be more consistent moving forward.

“I don’t want it to be a one-game thing for the season,” said Orizu. “I want to bring more energy to my teammates.”
