MANILA – Tabbed to carry the load for Perpetual Help when Bright Akhuetie left, Nigerian big man Prince Eze has come through with a breakout season for the Altas.

Eze mostly served as Akhuetie's back-up in his first two seasons for Perpetual Help, but given additional minutes in the NCAA Season 93 tournament, the 6-foot-11 center has racked up impressive numbers – good enough to lead the Most Valuable Player race after the first round.

After nine games, Eze is averaging 14.8 points per game, seventh in the league, as well as a league best 17.2 rebounds per game. He is also norming 2.2 blocked shots per contest, second only to Emilio Aguinaldo College's Hamadou Laminou (2.4 bpg).

In all, Eze has amassed 52.44 player all-around value (PAV) points, leading all players.

Eze highlighted his superb first round with a 17-point, 14-rebound, three-block performance in the NCAA All-Star Game last Friday, wherein he helped the Saints claim an 84-80 victory over the Heroes at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

However, what may stain Eze's MVP campaign is Perpetual Help's subpar record.

The Altas are currently tied with Arellano University at the seventh spot with a 3-6 win-loss record, two games behind the No. 4 spot.

The 20-year-old Eze remains optimistic that they can make a run to the semifinals, however.

"If we will play harder and believe in each other more, I think we can still make it to the Final 4," said Eze.

Cameroonian Mike Harry Nzeusseu and CJ Perez of unbeaten Lyceum and San Beda’s Javee Mocin are at second, third and fourth places with 48.67, 47.56 and 47.56 PAVs, respectively, while EAC’s Sydney Onwubere is at No. 5 with 47.11 PAV.

Rounding up the top 10 were San Beda’s Robert Bolick (46.11), Letran’s Rey Nambatac (45.44), Mapua’s Christian Bunag (41.78), LPU’s Jaycee Marcelino (40.11), LPU’s MJ Ayaay (39.67) and Jose Rizal’s AbdulWahab AbdulRazak (39.67).

In the juniors’ division, Arellano U’s Aaron Fermin led the way with 60.89 PAV.
