MANILA, Philippines – Marestella Torres-Sunang failed to advance to the finals of the women's long jump at the Rio Olympics after finishing in 28th place among 38 competitors on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).

Torres-Sunang registered 6.22-m in her first jump during the qualifying round at the Olympic Stadium. It was her best effort as she managed only a 6.10-m and 6.15-m in her succeeding attempts.

All three jumps were well behind Torres-Sunang's personal best of 6.72-m, which she achieved in the Kazakhstan Open last July to earn a ticket to the Rio Games.

Torres-Sunang ranked 14th among 19 competitors in Group B, and 28th overall.

The top 12 long jumpers advanced to the finals. Serbia's Ivana Spanovic registered the best mark in the qualifiers, with a jump of 6.87-m. Great Britain's Jazmin Sawyers, meanwhile, ranked 12th with a jump of 6.53-m.

Torres-Sunang is making her third and final Olympic appearance.
