MANILA, Philippines – A well-rested Jose Rizal University (JRU) squad pounced on the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals, 77-48, to claim their third win of the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Heavy Bombers last played on August 4, when they bowed to San Beda College, 54-48. Since then, they had an 11-day lay-off due in part to inclement weather that washed out two entire NCAA game days.

Against an EAC team that is still reeling from the injury to starting center Hamadou Laminou, the Heavy Bombers unleashed a 23-11 second quarter to turn a slim 14-10 lead into an unassailable 37-21 advantage at the half.

It was all JRU from that point, as their lead ballooned to 35 points, with the shell-shocked Generals unable to put up much of a challenge in the second half.

"If this team were playing to our potential, hindi ako matatakot whoever ang kalaban namin," said JRU coach Vergel Meneses after their victory.

Erwin Grospe was named Player of the Game after tallying 19 points, 12 of which came in the first half, plus five rebounds. He scored 10 points in the opening frame, matching EAC's output.

Jed Mendoza added 15 points, while Abdel Poutouochi had nine points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

The Heavy Bombers dominated the paint, scoring 50 points from close-range as they took advantage of EAC's lack of a shot-blocker. As a team, they connected on 44.44% of their shots.

Meanwhile, it was simply a struggle for the Generals to score. Jeric Diego scored 13 points on 4-of-7 shots, but Jerome Garcia made only three of his 15 field goals for 12 points, and Sidney Onwubere connected on only two of 13 shots, scoring only five markers.

As a team, EAC made only 23.19% of their shots - the lowest field-goal percentage of a team so far in the tournament. The Generals' 12-of-33 shooting at the free throw line is also a season-low.

With the victory, the Heavy Bombers improved to 3-3 in the tournament.

The Generals, meanwhile, have now lost two straight games to drop to 3-4.

The scores:

JRU 77 – Grospe 19, Mendoza 15, Sawat 10, Poutouochi 9, Dela Virgen 6, Teodoro 6, Bordon 5, Abdul Razak 4, Castor 2, Lasquety 1, Pontejos 0, David 0
