MANILA, Philippines – Bonbon Batiller's debut for Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the NCAA Season 95 men's basketball tournament was one to forget.

Playing for the first time after recovering from shoulder surgery, Batiller averaged just 8.4 minutes per game and averaged more turnovers (3.0) than points (2.0) per contest.

That all changed last week, however, as Batiller powered the Knights to a 55-43 triumph over Jose Rizal University, scoring 14 points.

He proved that it was no fluke when he dropped 22 points in a thrilling 82-80 overtime win over University of Perpetual Help – a squad led by his former backcourt partner in University of the East, Edgar Charcos.

Letran benefited from Batiller's timely eruption as the Knights rose to a 3-1 win-loss slate, good for fourth in the league standings behind unbeaten teams San Beda University, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, and San Sebastian College.

With his resurgence, Batiller earned the season's second Chooks-to-Go Collegiate Press Corps NCAA Player of the Week award.

Prior to the season, Letran coach Bonnie Tan had been looking to Batiller to provide a spark for the Knights.

"Para sa akin, si coach Bonnie, talagang 'yung mga leaders, china-challenge niya. Talagang kailangan naming mag-step up," said Batiller.

"Kaya para sa 'kin, gagawin ko ang lahat para maabot ko 'yung expectation niya rin sa akin para makatulong ako sa team as a leader at senior," he added.

The 25-year-old from General Santos City bested Letran teammate Ato Ular, the San Sebastian tandem of RK Ilagan and Allyn Bulanadi, Lyceum of the Philippines University’s Jayson David, San Beda’s James Canlas, and JRU’s Agem Miranda for the weekly award handed out by scribes from print and online outlets covering the NCAA.
