MANILA, Philippines – With a new coach leading the way, the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB) Blazers are hoping to finally get over their past struggles and compete at a high level once more.

Season 92 record: 1-17

Season 92 summary: Season 92, to put it bluntly, was a disaster for CSB. JJ Domingo struggled to fill in the hole left by Jonathan Grey as their go-to scorer, and an unfortunate injury to Clement Leutcheu robbed the team of their one true big man.

At the very least, the Blazers were able to take comfort in that they did not wind up with a winless season. In their final elimination round game, they came away with a 65-61 upset of Lyceum of the Philippines University to salvage a measure of pride.

Key losses: Fons Saavedra, Christian Fajarito

Key returnees: Yankie Haruna, Clement Leutcheu, JJ Domingo

Key additions: Unique Naboa, Coach TY Tang

Projection: After mustering only one win in 18 games in Season 93, there is truly nowhere to go but up for the Blazers. They got the rebuilding process started by bringing in TY Tang – a proven winner – as their new head coach.

Tang preached about changing the culture and environment of CSB, encouraging his young team to focus not just on the results but also on the process.

They already showed some good signs in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup, where they opened the tournament with a 64-49 rout of Mapua University.

It turned out to be the highlight of their tournament, but the Blazers nevertheless continued to show improvement even as the losses piled up. Tang noted that by the end of the summer tournament, they were putting up a strong challenge not just to NCAA teams, but to UAAP teams as well.

For the rookie head coach, these are good signs heading into their campaign in Season 93, where they seek not just to improve upon last year's results, but also to show that change has come in the CSB basketball program.

In their own words: "We'll be setting a goal – at least to give our team a chance for the Final 4. That's the first step for us this season. Everybody wants to get into the Final 4, at least to the playoffs. But how do we get there? We're going to break it down. After our season is over, we go back and assess what happened to our team." – Coach TY Tang.
