MANILA, Philippines -- Homesickness is admittedly a concern for Thirdy Ravena, who is set to make a trail blazing move to Japan later this year when he plays for the San-En NeoPhoenix in the B.League.

Ravena joined the first division club as an import, as the league's first signing under its Asian Player Quota rules. The former Ateneo de Manila University star chose the Japanese team, despite getting offers from Australia, New Zealand, and Italy.

He acknowledged that the country's proximity to the Philippines was a factor in his decision.

"I chose Japan just for the sole purpose of its proximity," Ravena said. "Homesickness is also very tough… I'm just thinking about my family. That's one of the reasons why we chose Japan as well."

Nonetheless, Ravena is hopeful that he can feel at home in Japan, particularly in the city of Toyohashi where the NeoPhoenix is based.

He is already looking forward to playing in front of thousands of his countrymen there, as the area has a sizable Filipino community. Ravena is also excited about familiarizing himself further with the Japanese culture, which he said he is a massive fan of.

"Even before this happened, I've always been a fan of Japanese people, culture," said Ravena. "They're very welcoming."

"Japan brings a whole lot of culture and history, even in fashion. I've always been a fan, especially of Japanese food," he added. "I think Japan could actually feel like home when I'm there."

His one-year stint with the club marks the longest time that Ravena will spend outside of the Philippines and away from his family. While he is somewhat anxious about the separation, Ravena is also excited about the opportunity that he has received.

"I've seen Toyohashi City, but only in pictures so I'm very excited to see it for myself in person," he said. "And of course, the fans, I can't wait to play for all of you guys. I can't wait to play with the team."

Ravena is tasked with leading the NeoPhoenix, a five-win team last season, out of the B.League's cellar. The team's officials have already tabbed him as a "key player" in their campaign this year, which is set to start in October.
