MANILA -- Gilas Pilipinas got a rude awakening when it ran smack against a high-scoring Turkey national squad during their scrimmage in Istanbul early Wednesday morning.

The Philippine side, which emerged from a nine-day training camp in Greece, fell behind by 35 points to surrender a 103-68 verdict against Turkey.

According to a report on sports website Spin, the Filipinos trailed early in the game, 30-19, when Turkey’s Birzan Batuk started scoring from the outside.

After two quarters, Gilas was already down, 57-32.

Gilas big man June Mar Fajardo, however, remains confident they can still improve.

The scrimmage is part of Gilas’ preparations for the upcoming FIBA Olympic Qualifying tournament in Manila in July. The Filipinos will face France and New Zealand in Group B, while Turkey is clustered with Senegal and Canada in Group A.

Gilas will play Turkey in another tune-up game on July 1 in Manila, just days before the Olympic qualifier.
