Thirdy Ravena wasn’t making much of an impact in the rivalry game between Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.

Turns out, he was just waiting for the biggest moment to spread his wings and take flight.

With 18.7 ticks to go, Ravena took a pass from Tyler Tio and turned it into the go-ahead basket for the Blue Eagles in their 80-78 conquest of the Green Archers on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The do-it-all forward only had nine points, five rebounds, and two blocks. It was his first and only triple in the game, however, that led to Ateneo’s rise to 3-2.

The Blue Eagles had a five-point lead inside the last three minutes, but failed to take care of the ball and witnessed Ben Mbala put DLSU up back on top, 74-73, with under 20 seconds remaining.

Off a timeout, however, Tio drove to the lane and found Ravena with a good look in the corner.

The incoming third-year player wasted no time in launching the triple try that took back a 76-74 lead for Ateneo.

Ravena was also fouled on the shot, but failed to make good on the bonus. The ball bounced into the hands of Matt Nieto, however, who converted his couple of charities for a four-point advantage in their favor.

With 7.1 ticks to go, Santi Santillan kept the Green Archers threatening, but Juwaun White’s free throws kept them at bay once and for all.

Anton Asistio topped the scoring column for the Blue Eagles with 13 points while Mike Nieto pounded in his own 10 points and eight rebounds.

The win thrusts Ateneo into the top four in Group A. However, they still have three games in seven days.

For DLSU, Ben Mbala and Aljun Melecio scored 23 and 20 points, respectively.

However, their third loss in seven games drops them out of the top four. They try to get back on track in their last assignment against Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Friday.
