DIGOS CITY—Team Mindanao ran rings around the Smart PBA All Stars composed of Gilas Pilipinas players in the first leg of the league's mid-season event at Davao del Sur Coliseum here on Wednesday.

With emphasis on guard play, outside shooting and being in the right place at the right time, the player who thrived the most in that system was Baser Amer.

The game was a tossup until early in the fourth quarter when Tim Cone's Mindanao squad strung together 3 consecutive 3-pointers that extended a 106-103 lead to 21 points in a span of 3 minutes.

In the decisive quarter, Amer scored 13 of his 22 points, including 3 makes from behind the arc.

He made all but 2 of his 11 field goals, including converting 4 of 6 overall from downtown, on top of tallying 7 rebounds and 7 assists.

The timing and the back-breaking nature of Amer's heat check helped the Meralco playmaker and Davao City native win Most Valuable Player of the game.

“Halos lahat ng tinira ko libre, sabi kasi ni coach Tim sa'min kelangan 'yung spacing namin sa loob maganda tapos 'yung ball movement namin maganda,” said Amer, who took the win at the expense of his Meralco coach, Norman Black.

“Nagkataon lang na ako 'yung nalilibre so credit sa mga teammates ko.”

Mark Barroca (20 points, 4 3-pointers, 7 assists), Peter June Simon (17 points, 8-of-9 field-goal shooting) and Carlo Lastimosa (16 points, 3 3-pointers) deserve special mention for their contributions to the win.

On a night when everyone stepped up for Team Mindanao, it's hard to fault Amer for being surprised that he received the nod as best player.

“Nakakuha ako ng award na unexpected talaga, ‘yung MVP award. So one for the books para sa akin, extra bonus,” he said.
