Jalen Green made quite the impression on Kai Sotto when they played against each other back in March 2018, as the American hoops phenom threw down a massive dunk against the towering teenager.

Not only that, but Green's FilAm Sports USA squad also defeated Sotto and the Ateneo Blue Eaglets twice in their showdowns in the NBTC Tournament. In their second meeting in March 2019, Green once again put Sotto on a poster.

Now, the two standouts will be part of the same team, after Sotto confirmed that he will be joining the NBA G League Select Team. Green was the first prospect to announce that he will take part in the groundbreaking program, which seeks to prepare players for the NBA by giving them top-level coaching both on and off the court.

"I'm really excited (to play) with Jalen Green," Sotto said in a conference call after his announcement. "I played against him, and in both games, I lost. I just can't wait to play with great players such as himself, and I can't wait to share the basketball court with him and learn some things with him."

Green, who is of Filipino descent, reportedly played a big role in convincing Sotto to join the G League instead of playing Division 1 basketball or going abroad. According to a report by Kentucky Sports Radio, the 18-year-old Green "handpicked Sotto" to join the Select team.

Aside from Green, Sotto will also be playing with top prospects Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix. They will be part of an independent squad that is not affiliated with any NBA or NBA G League team, and they are expected to see action against G League squads and even foreign national teams.

For the 7-foot-2 Sotto, it will be a unique challenge that he hopes will lead to him being the first full-blooded Filipino player drafted into the NBA.

"It's better exposure," he explained. "'Yung dream ko and 'yung goal ko is maging NBA player, and kung 'yun 'yung goal ko, mas maganda kung andoon na tayo sa mas malapit."

"I think naman na mas competitive and mas magiging mas maganda 'yung, 'yun nga, 'yung magiging competition, lalo na pag kalaban mo 'yung mga plano rin mag-NBA. So we think na 'yun nga, mas magandang path 'yung G League," he added.
