DAVAO CITY—As a growing number of youngsters are becoming addicted to online and mobile games, the Department of Education introduced on Saturday indigenous Filipino games as an exhibition sport in the 2019 Palarong Pambansa in hopes of reintroducing traditional sports to a new generation.

Participated in by hundreds of teachers and officials, “Larong Pinoy” kicked off at Davao City National High School, featuring patintero, kadang-kadang, karera ng sako, at hilaang-lubid.

According to Janette Veloso, a DepEd Region 9 official, the inclusion of such games was suggested by the central office to remind student-athletes of the country’s traditions.

“The Larong Pinoy is preferred compared to online games because we would want our learners as well to know their roots,” Veloso told ABS-CBN News.

“And those games experienced in their childhood, those that are so familiar with the community, those that are considered to be no requirement of any sophisticated equipment, those that are within their barangay, purok or community.”

The first event was kadang-kadang, also known as coconut-shell race, in which Northern Mindanao region emerged victorious. Region 10 also ruled hilaang-lubid (tug of war).

Patintero, played at the gymnasium, is a popular street game where one team attempts to clear sections of a field while the members of the opposing side, arms outstretched, try to guard their designated lines.

Veloso stressed the importance of teamwork and discipline playing the games, emphasizing why it should be considered a regular sport at the Palaro.

“The introduction of Larong Pinoy in the 2019 Palarong Pambansa is for us to rekindle those that have somehow influenced the childhood of many of our adults. Our millennials now are so engrossed with clicking buttons. This time, we introduced these to them to be inspired and to be able to learn all those insights on teamwork and develop discipline,” Veloso explained.

She said she firmly believes traditional games remain important in contemporary society.

She is also hoping the games will be sustained in succeeding editions of the Palaro and will add more events such as palo sebo.

“It’s really relevant as we experienced this during our childhood, on how these helped us improve our social aspect and as well as our relationship with our friends and neighbors,” Veloso said.
