MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University open spiker May Luna has not lost her confidence even as she has been unable to crack the Lady Spikers' starting line-up in her third season in the UAAP.

The powerful attacker instead settled into her role as a scoring punch off the bench, and is always ready to step up whenever one of their starters struggle.

This was the situation on Wednesday, when head coach Ramil de Jesus was unhappy with the performance of Tin Tiamzon in their game against Adamson University. The usually steady Tiamzon could not get into a rhythm on offense, and had trouble at the back row as well.

That prompted the veteran mentor to send in Luna, who responded by scoring nine points in La Salle's 25-21, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18 triumph over the Lady Falcons. Luna came off the bench in the second and third sets, but played in the entirety of the fourth frame.

"Nag-promise ako sa sarili ko na kapag may chance na papasukin ako ni coach, i-offer ko 'to sa kanila," Luna said after the game.

Luna became a fan favorite in Season 79, with La Salle's supporters applauding her energy, tremendous power, and especially her heavy jump serve. But she has been unable to win a spot in the starting six against the steadier Tiamzon and the veteran Cheng.

Nevertheless, Luna said being a reserve does not affect her mindset.

"Laban lang," she said. "Hindi ko iniisip na 'reserve ka lang.' Iniisip ko lang na, you are the chosen one, parang ganoon."

"Basta may chance talaga – grab it," she added.

That Luna is making the most of her situation is of no surprise to La Salle veteran Kianna Dy, who commended her younger teammate's work ethic and attitude.

"Sa training, makikita mo na lagi siyang aggressive, and makikita mo rin sa game," said Dy, who led La Salle with 17 points against Adamson. "Ready siya lagi, kapag ipapasok na siya ni coach."

"Makikita mo naman 'yung eagerness niyan pumatay," she added. "Magaling talaga itong batang ito, so watch out."
