MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas (UST) bolstered its chances of making it to the Final 4 of the UAAP Season 79 men's volleyball tournament after a gritty five-set victory against De La Salle University on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Center.

The Growling Tigers pounced on La Salle's errors late to come away with a 28-30, 25-23, 25-20, 16-25, 15-11 victory that hiked their record to 6-6.

UST is now tied with Far Eastern University (FEU) for third and fourth places in the league standings.

"Medyo maayos-ayos ang execution namin doon sa prepared na set plays. We stuck to the game plan, at talagang pilit na iniiwas sa main passer nila ang service namin," said UST coach Odjie Mamon after their victory.

The Green Spikers outgunned the Growling Tigers, 58-48, in attacks, but UST made up for it with 13 blocks to seven for La Salle.

It was the Green Spikers' own errors, however, that ultimately doomed their cause. In the final rally off the game, two La Salle players miscommunicated on a routine reception, giving UST to winning point. La Salle had 39 unforced errors in the game, while UST had 35.

"Sinabi ko na ilaro na lang nila, kasi nasa kamay naman na nila (ang kapalaran nila)," Mamon said of their performance in the fifth set. "Wala na kaming magagawa roon eh. Nag-respond naman sila."

Manuel Medina led UST with 15 points, while Jayvee Sumagaysay had 13 points on nine attacks and four kill blocks. Jerico Jose scored four of his 14 points off service aces.

Cris Dumago and Geraint Baco had 17 points each for La Salle, while Arjay Onia added 16 markers.

In the first game, National University (NU) made it 10 wins in a row after beating University of the Philippines (UP), 27-25, 25-18, 22-25, 19-25, 15-12.

Fauzi Ismail tallied 30 points, while Bryan Bagunas added 23 points for the Bulldogs.

NU committed a whopping 40 errors in the match, but made up for it by overwhelming UP on attacks, 66-50.

Mark Millete and Wendel Miguel each had 17 points for the Fighting Maroons.

The Bulldogs improved to 11-1 in the tournament, while UP dropped to 5-7.
