MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion De La Salle University and University of Santo Tomas (UST) collide in a crucial showdown in the UAAP Season 79 women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Spikers (9-2) are unbeaten in the second round, having won all four of their matches since a four-set loss to archrivals Ateneo de Manila University.

If La Salle beats UST in their 4 p.m. match up, they will tie the Lady Eagles at 10-2 in first place and bring them closer to a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final 4.

Coach Ramil de Jesus, however, is wary of the Tigresses, who are coming off a morale-boosting four-set victory over Far Eastern University (FEU).

"Ang UST, talagang every game, nagi-improve," said De Jesus. "Dapat, paghandaan nang husto, kasi isa sila sa mataas ang standing."

The Tigresses currently have a 7-4 win-loss slate, and are on track for their first semifinals stint in five seasons.

A win over La Salle will give UST a one-game cushion over joint fourth-placers University of the Philippines (UP) and National University (NU), who both have 7-5 slates.

For UST coach Kungfu Reyes, the clash against the defending champions should be a good gauge for his team.

"Medyo umaangat na kami, pero wala pa rin kami doon sa 80%," he said. "Nasa 70 to 75% pa lang. Hopefully, sa last three games namin, at least pumalo kami sa 80% sa iginagalaw namin."

Meanwhile, FEU tries to check a two-game skid and bolster its Final 4 bid against the also-ran University of the East at 2 p.m.

The Lady Tamaraws' quest for a third straight semifinals appearance look dim, as they now trail UP and NU by one-and-a-half games.

In the men's division, UST (5-6) and La Salle (4-7) collide in a key battle for the two remaining Final Four berths at 10 a.m., right after early semifinalist NU (10-1) and UP (5-6) take the floor at 8 a.m.
