MANILA, Philippines – Ria Meneses of University of Santo Tomas (UST) knows very well that she has tough competition for the middle blocker position in the women's national volleyball team pool.

Meneses, a former UAAP Best Blocker, was one of the youngest middle blockers selected in the 25-member pool. Other middles taken include former UST star Maika Ortiz, Jaja Santiago, Gen Casugod, Aby Maraño, and Mika Reyes.

Thus, the young Tigress said she will simply work hard to try and stand out among the impressive group.

"May kanya-kanya na silang pangalan," Meneses said of the other middle hitters. "Alam ko namang mas angat sila sa akin. Ako, andoon pa lang sa start."

"So gagawin ko na lang ang normal na ginagawa ko, kasi start ko pa lang," she added. "Sila, papunta na sa ine-aim nila."

[They all have their own names already, and I know they're better than I am. I'm just starting. So I will just do what I normally do.]

Meneses admits she did not expect to make it to the national pool in the first place. "Chamba" was how she called her inclusion, though of course she was delighted by the achievement.

"Kahit sinong player ang tanunging, gustong-gusto namin maging part ng national team," she said. "Iba na ang nire-represent doon – 'yung country."

"Parang mas nakaka-inspire, mas lalo kang magpu-pursige sa training," she added.

Meneses averaged 0.44 kill block per set in the first round of the UAAP Season 79 women's volleyball tournament, and currently anchors a net defense that ranks sixth in the league.
