The University of the Philippines men and the University of the East women ruled the opening day of UAAP Season 82 judo at SM Mall of Asia Arena Saturday.

UP leaned on the heroics of sophomore Zarchie Garay to finish on top, while UE relied on team captain Jea Lopez.

The Fighting Maroons collected 20 points, holding a four-point lead over reigning back-to-back men's champion University of Santo Tomas.

Garay, formerly of Far Eastern University, stunned heavy favorite and two-time half-heavyweight champion Keith Reyes in the final, thanks to a last-second throw that merited an ippon.

Rookie and Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist Jayvee Ferrer of UP was impressive in his UAAP debut, capping it with a win over his senior, Yonji Avendano, after the latter accumulated three penalties.

Meanwhile, Lopez and the rest of Lady Warriors hold a precarious 7-point advantage over reigning 5-time champion UST, after ending the day with 19 points.

The graduating skipper beat La Salle rookie Andrea De Leon in the final of the featherweight division.

Meanwhile, her sister Leah also fended off a newcomer in Alyssa Baloy in the next heavier class, the extra-lightweight.

The elder Lopez finished the match in just 30 seconds after a swift throw for an ippon to get the gold. On the other hand, Leah had to endure a longer fight, but ultimately got a full point herself.
