MANILA, Philippines – National University (NU) is one game away from regaining the UAAP juniors crown after the Bullpups downed defending champion Ateneo de Manila High School, 70-58, in Game 1 of the best-of-3 finals on Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

In a rematch of last season's championship showdown, the Bullpups drew first blood against the Blue Eaglets in the Season 81 finals, behind a balanced effort that saw four players reach double-digits.

Carl Tamayo (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Kevin Quiambao (14 points, 13 rebounds) both had double-doubles for NU, while Terrence Fortea and Gerry Abadiano each scored 11 markers.

Fortea also nailed the tough floater with under two minutes left that gave the Bullpups some breathing room, and eventually allowed them to post the double-digit victory.

Season 81 MVP Kai Sotto scored 16 points and grabbed 15 boards for Ateneo, while tallying 5 blocks. Geo Chiu added 12 points and 11 boards.

However, chief playmaker Forthsky Padrigao was held to just 4 points on 2-of-12 shooting. He also had 6 rebounds an d8 assists, but also committed 8 of Ateneo's 21 turnovers.

NU now has a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series, with Game 2 slated for Friday.
