MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) After falling short in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament, Lyceum of the Philippines University finally got the job done in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).

In another entertaining battle between two of the top collegiate teams in the country, the Pirates outlasted San Beda University, 70-66, in an all-NCAA final on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The PCCL crown is the first major title won by Lyceum during Topex Robinson's tenure as head coach.

"We just kept it together," said Robinson after the game. "What we reminded them is to play in the moment, don't worry about the future. I just want them to enjoy the game."

"It's always going to be an opportunity na minsan lang mangyari 'to. So we want to take advantage of that opportunity," he added.

Jaycee Marcelino shone brightest for Lyceum, scoring 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting while grabbing nine rebounds. He also knocked down the biggest shot of the game, a pull-up jumper with 44.9 seconds left that gave the Pirates a 68-62 lead. The energetic guard earned Finals MVP honors.

Lyceum and San Beda engaged in four entertaining games during the NCAA Season 93 tournament, with the Red Lions eventually beating the Pirates in the best-of-three finals to win the crown. Their championship game in the PCCL was no different, as the two squads went toe-to-toe for nearly 40 minutes.

The Pirates held a slim 39-35 lead at halftime, only for San Beda to wipe the deficit with a blistering 8-0 run to open the third frame. The Red Lions, who were playing without injured star guard Robert Bolick, surged ahead 57-54 after three quarters, with Javee Mocon beginning to assert himself.

But the Red Lions went cold in the fourth period, while Lyceum got a boost in the form of Spencer Pretta and Niño Ibañez. The two unheralded guards both knocked down three-pointers to open the final period, sparking the crucial 13-1 exchange that gave the Pirates the lead for good.

Marcelino was instrumental in the run, floating up a shot over the outstretched arms of Donald Tankoua before adding three free throws to cap the rally. San Beda, for its part, floundered as they missed field goal after field goal.

Indeed, it was not until there were just two minutes and 27 seconds left to play that the Red Lions finally got a bucket courtesy of Clint Doliguez. His and-1 play made it four-point game, 66-62.

Lyceum missed its chances to pad the lead after Mike Nzeusseu, CJ Perez, and MJ Ayaay all missed their shots, but San Beda could not make them pay after Tankoua bricked a lay-up. Marcelino then responded by draining the jumper that made it a six-point game, 68-62, with just 44.9 seconds to go.

San Beda made one last push, thanks to lay-ups by Tankoua and AC Soberano, but Pretta coolly knocked down the game-clinching free throws with 3.6 seconds to go.

"We enjoy every moment that we play San Beda," Robinson said after the game. "I'm sure they also feel the same way about us. There's so much respect, which is important in basketball."

NCAA MVP CJ Perez struggled in the final, making only four of his 17 shots for eight points. Marcelino stepped up in a big way, however, while Nzeusseu was a force inside the paint with 16 points and 11 boards.

The Pirates had a 54-40 rebounding edge, and grabbed 25 offensive rebounds that clearly frustrated the Red Lions.

Without Bolick, it was Mocon who led the way for San Beda as he scored 24 points and grabbed eight boards. Tankoua finished with a 13-point, 15-rebound double-double.
