MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle University Green Spikers finally notched their first victory of the UAAP Season 79 men's volleyball tournament by sweeping University of the Philippines (UP) in straight sets on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.

After losing their first two assignments, the Green Spikers came away with a straightforward 25-23, 25-19, 25-21 victory over the Fighting Maroons to improve to 1-2.

Raymark Woo, the reigning best scorer of the league, led the Green Spikers with 18 points, all on attacks, while three other La Sallians had nine points each.

"Masaya ako kasi nanalo na ulit sa pagbalik ko sa UAAP," said head coach Nes Pamilar, who notched his first victory as La Salle's coach.

"Maraming naging problema noong unang dalawang laro naming. Maganda kasi ngayon, nakita 'yung response ng mga bata," he added.

Alfred Valbuena had 17 points for the Fighting Maroons, but made only 14 of his 41 spike attempts. No other UP player reached double-digits.

UP dropped to 2-1 for a share of second place.

In the first game, University of Santo Tomas (UST) escaped with a five-set victory over University of the East (UE), 28-26, 19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-7.

Manuel Medina led UST with 20 points, while Arnold Bautista contributed 16. The Tiger Spikers took advantage of UE's 40 unforced errors in the win.

The loss squandered the career-high 32-point effort of UE's Edward Camposano, who had 28 points on attacks.
