MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas (UST) broke into the win column on Wednesday after making quick work of University of the East (UE), 25-17, 25-15, 25-21, at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

After bowing to De La Salle University in five sets in their season-opener, the Golden Tigresses had little problem with the Lady Warriors, as they racked up their first win of the UAAP Season 80 women's volleyball tournament.

Star spiker Sisi Rondina was again at the forefront of the Tigresses' charge, as she fired 20 points including the match-winner.

No other UST player scored in double-digits, but they had a massive 40-27 advantage in spikes and got 26 free points off the Lady Warriors' errors.

"Maganda 'yung pag-bounce back namin, kasi coming from a five-set loss, nakuha namin ng straight sets 'yung laro," said UST coach Kungfu Reyes.

UST registered comfortable wins in the first two sets, as the Lady Warriors shot themselves in the foot with multiple errors. Indeed, the Tigresses won Set 1 through a UE service error, and Set 2 through an attack error by their foes.

The third set was a different story, however, as the Lady Warriors showed renewed energy. Bench players Zilfa Olarve and Jana Sta. Maria stepped up, and the Lady Warriors built a two-point lead even with Shaya Adorador on the bench.

They were up 12-10 off a quick hit by Seth Rodriguez when the Tigresses made their move. A block by Caitlyn Viray and a mishit by Rodriguez tied the third set at 12, and UST wound up scoring three of the next four points to seize a 15-13 lead. The Tigresses never trailed again, with Rondina coming alive in the closing stretch to seal the deal for her team.

UST now has a 1-1 win-loss record, while UE dropped to 0-2. The Lady Warriors were coming off a five-set loss to University of the Philippines in their season opener.

Mary Ann Mendrez was the only UE player with 10 points.
