MANILA, Philippines -- Francis Vicente and Sammy Acaylar were officially named by Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. as coaches for the national women’s and men’s teams that will see action in the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur.

LVPI president Joey Romasanta announced on Thursday the appointment of Vicente as the women’s coach while Acaylar will handle the men’s team for the biennial meet in Malaysia slated from August 19 to 31.

Vicente, handled the national youth team in a couple of international stints last year and current head coach of University of the East Lady Warriors in the UAAP, will take the reins of the women’s squad.

Acaylar, who led the Perpetual Help Altas back on top of the NCAA in Season 91 and was a part of the coaching staff of the national women’s team that won the country’s last gold medal in the 1993 SEA Games, will handle the men’s team.

The two coaches out of the 23 names in the association’s shortlist of mentors presented solid programs for the national squad when they sat down with the three-man search committee led by Peter Cayco, Jeff Tamayo and Rod Roque. They were recommended by the committee to the LVPI Board, which originally scheduled the announcement on Friday.

The coaches are tasked to conduct a tryout to form a 16-woman and 16-man pool that will represent the country in the regional meet.
