MANILA, Philippines – Derrick Pumaren will be the new head coach of the De La Salle Green Archers, the university announced on Tuesday morning.

It will be a homecoming of sorts for Pumaren, who coached the Green Archers from 1986 to 1991 and led the team to two championships in 1989 and 1990.

Pumaren coached University of the East from 2014 to 2017. He failed to lead the Red Warriors to the Final 4 during his stint, compiling a 21-35 record. From 2018 to 2019, he handled the basketball program of Centro Escolar University.

"The university welcomes back Coach Derrick to the Lasallian community as he maps out the new direction of the Green Archers," La Salle said in a statement.

Coaches Gian Nazario and Jermaine Byrd, who called the shots for La Salle last year, will stay on as an assistant coach and skills coach, respectively.

The Green Archers missed out on the Final 4 in Season 82, finishing with a 7-7 record for fifth place.
