MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University men's volleyball team received a boost on Thursday after Arnold Laniog was named as its new head coach.

Tiebreaker Times first reported the development.

Laniog is the coach of De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB) in the NCAA, having steered the Blazers to Season 92 title behind an MVP-campaign from Johnvic de Guzman. He also served as interim head coach of the Lady Blazers last year.

Laniog replaces Norman Miguel, who is set to be the new coach of the National University Lady Bulldogs.

"Malaking challenge talaga, kasi UAAP na ito," Laniog said of his new post. "Lahat ng kasali na team is very competitive, especially considering na maraming nag-graduate sa team from last season, and now half of the team ay rookies."

Laniog is taking over a rebuilding La Salle squad that went 5-9 in Season 80, and lost four players – Raymark Woo, Arjay Onia, Mike Frey, and Jopet Movido – to graduation.

Given his situation, Laniog said he will simply "try our very best to push the team to their best potential."

"No matter what happens, we will just keep on working hard to improve and develop the team's skills and chemistry," he said.

Laniog remains in charge of the CSB men's volleyball program.
