MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) After just one year in charge, Babes Castillo is out as the head coach of the National University (NU) women's volleyball team.

Sources confirmed the development to ABS-CBN News, with one hinting that Castillo had lost the job even before Christmas.

Castillo, however, offered no comment to ABS-CBN Sports when asked about his status with NU.

Norman Miguel, former head coach of the De La Salle University Green Spikers, is reportedly set to take over Castillo's post with the Lady Bulldogs.

Miguel, however, was similarly non-committal.

"As per the instruction and advise of the Sports Office, antay na lang daw po 'yung press statement on this matter," said Miguel.

Castillo took over the NU women's volleyball program in June 2017, following the resignation of Roger Gorayeb. He had a promising start, leading the Lady Bulldogs to a 6-1 record in the first round of UAAP Season 80.

But they won just one game in the second round and slouched into the semifinals as the No. 4 seed, where they were summarily dismissed by eventual champion La Salle.

More trouble struck in the offseason, when star setter Jasmin Nabor and veteran spiker Jorelle Singh were cut from the team. It remains to be seen if either player will return to the Lady Bulldogs now that a new head coach is in charge.

It appears that Castillo will land on his feet, however, as he has taken on the post of head coach for the Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors in the Philippine Superliga.
