Hundreds of families have evacuated their homes in Canlaon City amid increased volcanic unrest of Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Oriental, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said Wednesday.

As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, some 88 families or 248 individuals have  been evacuated in three different public high schools for their temporary shelter.

In Barangay Masulog, 65 families or 204 individuals have been evacuated to Masulog High School.

In Barangay Malaiba, 10 families or 31 individuals are now seeking shelter in Malaiba Elementary School while 3 families or 13 individuals from Barangay Pula have been evacuated to Pula Elementary School.

In a September 11 report, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said it has recorded 337 volcanic earthquakes from Mt. Kanlaon over a 24-hour period.

Phivolcs said it recorded a 1,000-meter high plume, which blew in a southeast direction, as well as 9,985 tons of sulfur dioxide flux emissions on September 10.

The agency also observed ground deformation from the volcano.

Alert Level 2 remains hoisted over the volcano, barring the public from entering Kanlaon’s 4-km permanent danger zone.

All aircraft are banned from flying near the volcano.

In June, Mount Kanlaon exploded for six minutes, sending a plume of ash, rocks and gases five kilometers into the sky.
