MANILA — Recovery operations are underway for ships that sank or have foundered off Bataan, the Philippine Coast Guard said, noting that minimal oil sheens were observed near one of the vessels.

In an update Saturday night, the PCG said minimal oil sheens were observed near the sunken MTKR Terranova after Coast Guard ship BRP Malapascua conducted drone aerial survey and diving operations.

Another PCG ship, BRP Sindangan, sprayed dispersant on patches of oil detected 500 meters from ground zero, it said.

The salvage company tapped by the owners of the Terranova continued the installation of flange valve plates in the cargo's oil tanks, the PCG said, adding that the salvor completed six hot tapping operations.

No oil sheens were observed near MTKR Jason Bradley, which remained partially afloat, the PCG said.

Nonetheless, they patrolled nearby communities for possible oil spills or sheen sightings.

The PCG said its personnel ensured the spill booms placed near the vessel were intact.

Meanwhile, the contracted salvor for the grounded MV Mirola 1 has prepositioned their equipment for the salvage operation.

Coast Guard personnel conducted foot patrol along the shorelines of Sitio Quiapo, Mariveles, and Bataan to address possible sightings of oil spills or sheens.
