BATAAN — A motor tanker has sunk in the vicinity waters of Barangay Cabcaben, Mariveles town, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Sunday.

While there was no information yet as to the exact date it sank, the PCG said its three 44-meter vessels only confirmed the presence of the vessel’s wreck on Saturday afternoon.

Coast Guard divers conducted an initial underwater assessment on Sunday morning and determined the identification of the vessel as “MTKR JASON BRADLEY.”

Coast Guard Station Bataan Commander Lieutenant Commander Michael John Encina said there was no cargo on board the vessel, but it has working fuel.

As of Sunday, the PCG is still preparing the equipment and salvage operations are expected to commence soon, which will take roughly one to two weeks.

The PCG has already installed booms in the area to contain possible oil leak, according to spokesperson Rear Admiral Armando Balilo.

“First hour today PCG divers conducted temporary capping of leaks on said vessel, now identified to be ‘MTKR Jason Bradley’ this morning. The leaks have since been observed to have almost stopped. Konting patak-patak na lang daw,” Balilo told ABS-CBN News.

“Diesel lang ‘yong laman,” he added.

The PCG is still responding to an oil spill from tanker MT Terra Nova capsized in Manila Bay, nearly seven kilometers off Limay municipality in Bataan province.

The siphoning of the 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil from the vessel's hold was pushed back to Tuesday at the earliest so divers could seal nine leaking valves first, according to Balilo.

The sinkings occurred as heavy rains fueled by southwest monsoon and typhoon Carina battered Metro Manila and surrounding regions in recent days.
