MANILA — The mayor of Limay town in Bataan reported Friday that the 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil carried by the capsized and now submerged Motor Tanker (MT) Terra Nova remains intact as of today.

"Sa kasalukuyan ang lumalabas pa lang na langis siguro mga 4 to 500 liters, yun lang don mismo sa langis ng barko, ng tanker," Limay, Bataan mayor Nelson David told Teleradyo Serbisyo.

(Right now the only fuel that has spilled in the waters is from the tanker itself.)

"Yung laman niya, hindi pa naman po, wala pa namang lumalabas. Sana po maagapan kaagad para hindi makapinsala sa aming karagatan at mamamayan," he added.

(The oil it was carrying has yet to leak. I hope they prevent that from happening so our waters and community will not be affected.)

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Thursday that MT Terra Nova, carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil, capsized and eventually submerged 3.6 nautical miles east off Lamao Point, Limay, Bataan, at around 1:10 a.m. of the same day.

The vessel was on its way to Iloilo when it encountered severe weather condition brought by typhoon Carina.

The PCG warned that if all the oil in the tanker were to leak, it would be the biggest spill in Philippine history.

Sixteen out of 17 crew members of the oil tanker have been rescued while one was confirmed dead.

PCG has yet to issue an update on the incident.
