MANILA -- An island barangay in the town of Caramoan in Camarines Sur was able to keep the lights on during the onslaught of severe tropical storm Kristine in the area.

In a statement, First Philippine Holdings (FPH) said the island of Haponan had a steady supply of power as the storm battered the area because of a microgrid established by FP Island Energy Corporation.

Aside from the one in Haponan, FPI Island also has 2 microgrids in Lahuy and Quinalasag. While these were preemptively shut down before Kristine made landfall, normal operations resumed in 11 of the 13 barangays 48 hours after the storm passed and the winds died down.

A microgrid provides power to remote areas of the country not connected to the main grid and not easily accessible by large power distribution utilities.

Since it started operating in December 2021, the Haponan microgrid has given residents internet access, allowing teachers and students touse multimedia in an educational settings.
