President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Thursday authorities were monitoring the situation at the Taal volcano after its minor eruption on Thursday.

Marcos said standard procedures were in place that would allow government agencies to respond to calamities.

"When the volcano erupts or the storm comes or magkalindol or whatever, they know what to do,” Marcos told reporters in Pasig.

“What we have to do is to monitor the situation and continue to see where are the areas --- kasi not every situation is the same. So how do we adjust? Where are the areas that need special attention, where are the areas that are okay. So, ‘yun ang ginagawa namin ngayon,” he continued. “You know, the people that we have there know what to do, that’s why I put them there.”

Taal has stayed quiet after Wednesday's phreatomagmatic eruption, with not a single volcanic quake recorded in the past 24 hours, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said molten magma came into contact with water and caused the minor eruption, which lasted a total of 11 minutes and produced a 2,400-meter-tall plume.

"It’s a minor phreatomagmatic eruption. Hindi ito katulad nung nangyari noong 2020 na umabot ng 15 kilometers 'yung eruption column natin. Ito ay 2 kilometers lamang," he told TeleRadyo Serbisyo.

Sulfur dioxide emissions also remained low at 2,532 tons on Wednesday, with no volcanic smog detected, he said.

Alert level 1 remains hoisted over Teal, indicating possible gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, and minor ashfall.

The Phivolcs chief warned the public to expect phreatic or steam-driven eruptions from time to time when hot volcanic material comes in contact with water.

Earthquakes and volcanic activity are not uncommon in the Philippines due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide deep below the Earth's surface.
