MANILA - Airport authorities will look into a commotion that ensued Friday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 after a balikbayan's smart watch mysteriously disappeared during inspection, as narrated by the victim's relative in a viral social media post.

In a Facebook post Monday, Jorge Hizon said his balikbayan sister Melinda, along with her family, were set to depart for Los Angeles, California at the NAIA Terminal 2 when the incident happened.

Hizon said a male inspector told one of Melinda's grandsons to take off his smart watch and put it in a tray for x-ray screening. Others wearing watches were not required to do the same, he said.

After passing through the x-ray machine, the smart watch was lost.

Thinking it fell on the ground, the family searched under the machine but could no longer find the watch. The inspector who asked the grandson to remove his watch also left the counter, raising the family's suspicions.

For about 30 minutes, he said, Melinda argued with inspectors manning the x-ray machine and demanded that the one who had told her grandson to take off his watch come back and answer her questions.

Hizon said the inspector in question came back, but only after a female staffer showed up with the smart watch. She said she found it under the x-ray machine, the same place the family earlier checked.

Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Ed Monreal said they have begun retrieving CCTV footage covering areas where the gadget was lost and the area where the commotion between the passengers and airport security staff occurred.

"There will be no stone left unturned. Everybody will get their chance to speak and if our security screeners are liable, administrative charges [will be filed] and immediate suspension will be meted by the airport authority," he said.

Hizon hopes the matter will be resolved as his sister's daughter and grandchildren were all traumatized.
