MANILA - After a month-long journey, the cargo vessel carrying shipping containers of Canada trash from the Philippines is set to arrive in Vancouver this weekend.

The 69 containers left the port of Subic in Zambales on May 31.

The garbage row shook diplomatic ties between the two countries with President Rodrigo Duterte threatening to declare war on Canada if it did not take back the garbage shipment.

The Department of Foreign Affairs also recalled its ambassador and consuls to Canada after the Canadian government missed the May 15 deadline to take back the trash.

A total of 103 containers of Canadian waste consisting of household trash, plastic bottles and bags, newspapers, and used adult diapers, arrived in the Philippines in batches between 2013 and 2014.

The shipment was marked as recyclable scrap.

Of the total, at least 26 containers have already been buried in a Tarlac landfill.

A Philippine court in 2016 declared the import of 2,400 tons of Canadian waste illegal.

Canada said the waste, exported to the Philippines between 2013 and 2014, was a private commercial transaction done without the government's consent.
