MANILA - No Filipinos were hurt after a powerful storm lashed Oman, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Saturday.

In a statement, the DFA said the Philippine Embassy in Muscat continues to monitor the situation and is communicating with Filipinos in Salalah, the capital city of southern Oman's Dhofar province which Cyclone Mekunu hit the most.

There are around 49,000 Filipinos in Oman, of which 10,000 reside in Salalah, according to Ambassador Narciso Castañeda.

Mekunu battered the southern coast of Oman and killed at least two people before downgrading to a deep depression, authorities said. --With a report from Agence France-Presse
