Fil-Canadian couples win snow-sculpting awards in Alberta

A Filipino-Canadian team bested five other international competitors to win the "judges' pick" award at the First International Snow-Sculpting Competition in Alberta, Canada.

Composed of couples Ross and Marites Baisas. and Antonio and Maria Elena Baisas, Team Baisas also won the People's Choice Awards.

They won the contest for their snow sculpture called "Tangle", depicting two moose with interlocking antlers during the SnowDays Festival in Banff from January 17-19.

"Tangle" is now on display at Bear Street in the resort town.

During the competition, Team Baisas received support from the Filipino community in Banff.

Brothers Ross and Antonio come from a family of wood carvers in Paete, Laguna. Antonio first came to Canada in 1996, followed by Ross in 2012.

Antonio and Maria Elena are residents of Ottawa, while Ross and Marites live in Montreal.

After the competition, Team Baisas headed to Edmonton to join the Ice on White contest from January 23 to 25, Wednesday to Friday.
