Work at the COVID-19 Treatment Facility at the Eva Macapagal Super Terminal in Pier 15, Manila is underway as part of government’s response to the rising number of cases of the contagious disease in Metro Manila.
Returning Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and seafarers will be accommodated in the facility to serve their mandatory 14-day quarantine upon return to the country before returning to their homes.
The facility is in addition to 2 quarantine vessels set up earlier at the Port of Manila.
The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) led by General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago fast-tracked the completion of the treatment facility to boost COVID-19 treatment capacity in Metro Manila, where most COVID-19 cases have been recorded, as well as adjacent provinces.
The Pier 15 COVID-19 Treatment Facility has a total of 211 cubicles distributed in different zones to accommodate patients with mild, advanced and severe infections.
It is provided with hospital beds, portable toilets, cargo containers for showers, and open-air dining facilities. Nurses' stations will be set up outside, with plastic barrier views of the inside to minimize the use of personal protective equipment.
The facility will be supervised by the Philippine Coast Guard Medical Group following quarantine guidelines set by the Bureau of Quarantine and Department of Health, according to Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade.
Personnel from the Department of Health (DOH) as well as health and safety personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) will attend to patients brought to the facility, while the PPA will provide support personnel.
The treatment facility was made possible in cooperation with the 2GO, Asian Terminals Inc., and the Lopez Group of Companies, which donated P100 million in funding support.
