MANILA – A new low pressure area may form inside the Philippine area of responsibility Thursday or Friday and develop into a tropical cyclone this weekend, weather bureau PAGASA said Wednesday.

"By tomorrow - Thursday, or Friday, mayroon na tayong posibleng low pressure area na ma-develop sa loob ng PAR, east ng Extreme Northern Luzon," weather forecaster Veronica Torres said in a climate forum.

When the system forms, it will be the 10th storm in the country this year and will be assigned the local name Julian.

"Kung ito ay maging [tropical depression] na, posible itong kumilos papuntang hilagang-kanluran papuntang Japan area," Torres added.

It is expected to bring scattered rains and gusty winds over Batanes and Babuyan Islands.

The warm easterlies from the Pacific will continue to affect Southern Luzon and Visayas in the next five days. Fair weather is expected in many parts of the country with possible isolated rain showers especially in the afternoon due to thunderstorms.

The combined effects of the southwest monsoon or habagat and the recent storms Ferdie, Gener, Helen, and Igme left 26 dead, 18 injured, and 3 missing, according to the latest situational report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Wednesday morning.

Almost 400,000 families or around 1.5 million individuals were affected in 13 regions, with 14,722 persons still in 100 evacuation centers.

Cumulative damage to houses, agriculture, and infrastructure has reached almost P630 million.

Around P53 million worth of assistance has been provided to around 61,500 families.
