MANILA — The Liberal Party of the Philippines is expected to form a coalition Senate slate for the 2025 elections with Akbayan’s Senator Risa Hontiveros.

At the political party’s National Executive Council meeting in San Juan, party officials announced it is fielding its chairman, former Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan, as their lone senatorial candidate for now.

However the group has also committed to support the senatorial campaign of former Senator Bam Aquino and Atty. Chel Diokno.

LP Executive Vice President Erin Tañada said with just one LP senatorial bet, there is a possibility to form a coalition with Hontiveros and other political parties.

“Magpapatawag ng coalition meeting si Sen. Risa dahil siya ang kinikilala ngayon na head of the opposition. And in that meeting, pag-uusapan ano yung magiging huling bilang ng ififield kandidato sa Senado,’ Tañada said.

The Liberal Party also honored Hontiveros during the council meeting for her work as a senator.

Rep. Edcel Lagman was also honored by the party at the event. Hontiveros and Lagman were not present in the event.

Tañada also said that the party will support former Vice President Leni Robredo who will run for the mayoralty post of Naga in Camarines Sur.

Tañada himself will also run as one of the nominees of the Mamamayang Liberal party-list, the sectoral party-list of LP.

Former Senator Leila de Lima will be the lead nominee, followed by former Rep. Ted Baguilat. Tañada is hopeful all three of them can win party-list seats and they hope to expand their social media strategies.

“Youth-driven yung sumuporta noong 2022 at ongoing rin trainings paano sila lalahok sa social media quite and quote war. Para lalung itulak ang kampanya ni Sec. Kiko, ni Sen. Bam, ni Atty Chel at party-list,” he said.

Pangilinan, meanwhile, accepted the nomination as LP senatorial candidate. He said there needs to be more reforms in various sectors like agriculture. “Itaga niyo sa bato hindi pa tayo tapos, parating pa lang tayo sa exciting part.”
