MANILA — There is no security threat for Vice President Sara Duterte, Philippine National Police chief Rommel Marbil said Monday, adding there was no political pressure to reduce her police security.

"Wala po siyang threat [sa buhay], wala po kaming nakita. She's being loved by our people," Marbil told the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs.

Marbil said that Duterte was not the only official to have reduced police security.

"With regard po doon sa iba, lahat po tinanggalan natin because we don't see any threat sa ibang tao at ang sinasabi ko nga kung meron pong reason, ibibigay po natin," Marbil said.

Committee chair Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a known ally of Duterte, asked Marbil about any threats from communist rebels as he cited that the vice president has taken a strong stand against them.

Marbil said they are ready to help if asked by the Presidential Security Command (PSC), which secures the two highest officials of the country.

So far, there are still 31 police personnel left to secure the vice president, Marbil said, but he maintained they were not his choice.

Dela Rosa then appealed to Marbil to give Duterte the choice of who would be the police personnel assigned to her as he maintained he was not appealing for the restoration of the past number.

Marbil said Duterte is still being secured by 358 personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, adding they used to have 106 personnel deployed to the vice president as augmentation to the PSC.

Dela Rosa maintained the VP needs high security.

Marbil however explained that the security reduction was meant to rationalize the PNP's deployment alone and that they would want to increase police visibility.
