MANILA — The United States and Japan have called on China not to increase tensions after the use of flares against a Philippine fisheries aircraft in the West Philippine Sea on August 19 and 22.

In a statement via X, US Ambassador MaryKay Carlon said her country stands with the Philippines and condemns China’s launching of flares.

She also called on Beijing to stop provocative and dangerous actions that undermine a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

The National Task Force of the West Philippine Sea on Saturday said People’s Liberation Army Air Force’s fighter jet 63270 executed dangerous maneuvers and deployed flares multiple times a “dangerously” close distance of approximately 15 meters from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource’s (BFAR) Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft conducing a maritime domain awareness flight near Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal) on August 19.

On August 22, China again launched flares from its military base on Zamora Reef (Subi Reef) while the same BFAR aircraft, in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard, was monitoring and intercepting poachers encroaching on the Kalayaan Island Group.

The incidents were the third air harassment of China this month after two Chinese air force’s multi-role fighters also conducted dangerous maneuvers and dropped flares against the Philippine Air Force’s patrol aircraft.

The Philippines shares a strong and multifaceted relationships with the US and Japan in the face of China’s aggression in the South China Sea, part of which is the West Philippine Sea.

The US provides direct defense and strategic support under the Mutual Defense Treaty, while Japan contributes through maritime security cooperation and diplomatic support.
