MANILA — The Department of Foreign Affairs on Friday urged Filipino seafarers to "exercise prudent choice" in traversing the Red Sea, reminding them of their "right-to-refuse sailing."

In a statement, the DFA said the situation at Red Sea has "worsened" and "poses a clear and present danger to all Filipino seafarers working in the area."

"The DFA therefore urges Filipino seafarers to exercise prudent choice and their 'right-to-refuse sailing' in the Red Sea. Philippine nationals should avoid the area altogether unless absolutely necessary for their livelihood," the DFA said.

In June, the Department of Migrant Workers tightened the rules on deployment of seafarers to vessels traversing Red Sea.
