President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday issued Executive Order No. 665 to delay by a couple of days the nonworking holiday commemorating the 1983 assassination of former Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a staunch political rival of his father's regime.

"Moving a day of commemoration will not diminish the fact that Ninoy died fighting for the country and the people he so loved and his death sparked a revolution that ended Marcos Sr.'s authoritarian rule," said the Aquino family in a statement.

The Palace said the order was intended to create a "4-day weekend" with Aug. 26 (Monday) being National Heroes Day.
