Sabina Shoal is part of China's Spratly Islands and is not in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Philippines, China's foreign ministry said on Monday (July 8).

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Saturday (July 6) that China's largest coast guard vessel, a "monster ship", anchored in Manila's EEZ in the South China Sea as a show of intimidation to its smaller Asian neighbor.

The China coast guard's 165-meter vessel entered Manila's 200-nautical mile EEZ last Tuesday (July 2), a spokesperson for the Philippines coast guard said during a news forum.

China claims most of the South China Sea, a key conduit for $3 trillion of annual ship-borne trade, as its own territory. Beijing rejects the 2016 ruling by The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration which said its expansive maritime claims had no legal basis.
